OPEC and ASEAN countries interested in the BRICS-Biomed project

The Tomsk Scientific Research Institute (RSI) of Cardiology presented the BRICS-Biomed consortium project at a global forum on research and innovation in the field of healthcare of Asian countries, which took place on 24-27 August in Manila and brought together about 3,500 representatives of government, business, non-profit organizations and scientific institutions from ASEAN and OPEC countries.

Shamil Akhmedov, Deputy Director for Innovation and Strategic Development at the SRI of Cardiology, was the only representative of Russia among the invited speakers from America and Europe. He presented a report about the aims of creating the international BRICS-Biomed consortium and the projects which its participants are interested in.

“The organizing committee in the Philippines chose our project, providing an opportunity to speak at the global forum. We received responses to our initiative and specific cooperation offers, which now need to be transformed into existing agreements. Since among the congress participants there were doctors, scientists, businessmen, bankers and international lawyers, these connections will help us to resolve any issues for projects,” said Akhmedov. He emphasized that now the task for the BRICS-Biomed organizers is to define the legal, financial and administrative operating mechanisms of the consortium.

In 2014 the SRI of Cardiology launched an initiative to establish an international consortium named BRICS-Biomed. The purpose behind the consortium’s creation is the development of new biomedical technologies and domestic demand and export of biotechnological products, and the creation of an industrial and technological base for the formation of new biotech branches of industry. The initiative was included in the government program INO Tomsk. On 5^th February 2015 scientists from the five BRICS countries (Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa) signed an agreement on the creation of the consortium and organization of technology transfer centers in biomedicine within public-private partnerships between BRICS countries.
