Over 1000 PhDs defended in Tomsk in 3 years

TPU rector and chairman of the Tomsk consortium, Petr Chubik, reported that the number of PhDs defended over the last three years amounted to 1082, whereas for higher doctorates the figure was 242: “According to these figures, we are national leaders in generating research personnel. In the space of three years, the publication activity of our member organizations has grown. We’ve seen the publication of 1400 monographs, 1800 textbooks, more than 28,000 papers – of which over 50% were jointly authored by consortium members – and 1252 patents have been obtained.”

Chubik noted that the share of international full-time students in 2014 amounted to 17.7%.

Over the last three years Tomsk academics were awarded 19 medals by the Russian Academy of Sciences, 2 Russian Federation government prizes in science and technology, 2 government prizes in science and technology for young scientists, and 9 government prizes in the field of education.

Prof. Chubik added that Tomsk universities plan to launch three unique collaborative master’s degree programs in 2015.

“We’re also working on the project Import/Export of Education, which will result in additional financing for new educational programs. In addition the consortium is coordinating the project Study in Tomsk, whose aim is to attract talented students to Tomsk universities. It’s truly profitable for all our higher education institutions when we represent not one university, but Tomsk education as a single brand.”

Another result of the consortium’s work, said Chubik, was the entry of all Tomsk universities in 2015 to the national rankings of RA Expert.

“Tomsk is the only city in the country where all the universities belong to the national Top-100. We’ve often said that we need to act as a single entity in world rankings, preserving nonetheless the legal independence of our respective organizations. This would be to the benefit of Tomsk Region.”
