TPU and TSU improve QS rankings

Tomsk Polytechnic University (TPU) and Tomsk State University (TSU) have improved their positions in the QS World University Rankings. Both of Tomsk’s leading universities are now in the world top-500 and 10 best Russian universities, according to the rankings.

Evaluation of the world’s best universities in the QS Rankings is based on six criteria: academic peer review, employer reputation, faculty/student ratio, citations per faculty, international student ratio, and also international staff ratio.

According to QS, both Tomsk universities belong to the 481-490 group, whereas a year ago TPU belonged to the 501-550 group, and TSU to the 491-500 group. Moreover, last year TSU and TPU were 10th and 11th respectively among Russian universities, yet now both universities are in the Russian top-10, sharing joint 8th place.

In the world rankings 7 Russian universities are ahead of their Tomsk counterparts: Lomonosov Moscow State University (108th place), Saint Petersburg State University (259th place), Novosibirsk State University (317th place), Bauman Moscow State Technical University (338th place), Moscow State Institute of International Relations (397th place), Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology (431-440) and Saint Petersburg State Technical University (471-480).

The Tomsk universities also entered the top-10 for affordable local accommodation. Furthermore, they overtook such leading Russian universities as National Research Nuclear University MEPhI and the Higher School of Economics (501-550), the Russian Peoples’ Friendship University (601-650) and others.

The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) yet again led the QS world rankings, with Harvard in second place. Third place was taken by the University of Cambridge.

In 2013 TPU and TSU entered the top-15 leading Russian universities allocated additional financing for improving their international competitiveness. According to last year’s results, both Tomsk universities were among the four strongest participants in the program. By 2020, no fewer than five Russian universities should enter the world’s top-100 universities.
